Cheers to beers at Flying Saucer – PLANET AUZ

Cheers to beers at Flying Saucer

On my last visit back to South Carolina I was fully aware that great beer does exist. No longer would I submit to Bud Light, PBR, or Coors ever again after being introduced to Widmer, Rogue, and even my new home town’s Deschutes or Bend Brewing beers! After drinking home made beer brewed by Cali I have a better appreciation for beer and what a good beer should taste like. I love the hops and only on a drunk night of beer pong will I ever put a cheap beer like bud light to my lips again!

With that in mind we set off to find some good beer in Columbia, South Carolina. I only knew of a few breweries or places to get good beer there such as Hop’s, Hunters and Gatherers, and The Flying Saucer.  We decided to head to The Flying Saucer and were not let down.

beerThe wall wall behind the bar at The Flying Saucer literally has over a 100 beers on tap!  It was like walking into beer heaven. Of course, I had been there before, but that was as a college kid with no interest in the best beer, but only about the best beer to get me wasted.  Growing up changes the plan and now we just want the best tasting beer without the hangover.

We ended up getting 3 sampler trays which was more than enough to taste a good amount of the beers we were interested in.

Of the ones we tried I liked these the best:

  • Bells Amber Ale – Kalamazoo, MI
  • Thomas Creek Red – Greenville, SC
  • Wychwood Hobgoblin – Witney, England
  • Carolina Blonde – Mooresville, NC
  • Smithwick’s Irish Ale – Dundalk, Ireland
  • Sam Adam’s Cherry Wheat – Boston, MA
  • Highland Kashmir IPA – Woodville, WA
  • Belhaven Scottish Ale – Dunbar, Scotland

So if you are ever in South Carolina and need a great place to chill and have a beer check out The Flying Saucer.  The waitresses are not too bad either!
